The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the open house and dedication dates for the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple.
A public open house will be held Thursday, September 12, through Saturday, September 28, 2024, excluding Sundays. A media day will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024, and invited guests will tour the temple Tuesday, September 10, and Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the dedication on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Two sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. central daylight time. The dedicatory sessions will be broadcast to all units in the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple district. More details will be announced later.
The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple was announced during the closing session of general conference in April 2019 by Church President Russell M. Nelson. Eight new temples were announced along with renovation plans for pioneer-era temples in Manti, Salt Lake and St. George, Utah.
“As we speak of our temples old and new, may each of us signify by our actions that we are true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ,” the prophet said. “May we renovate our lives through our faith and trust in Him. May we access the power of His Atonement by our repentance each day. And may we dedicate and rededicate our lives to serving God and His children—on both sides of the veil.”
Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, September 5, 2020, with a small group in attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple will be the second in Honduras and the 12th in Central America dedicated, announced, or under construction. Other temples in the region include the Cobán Guatemala, Guatemala City Guatemala, Huehuetenango Guatemala, Managua Nicaragua, Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala, Panama City Panama, Quetzaltenango Guatemala, Retalhuleu Guatemala, San José Costa Rica, San Salvador El Salvador and Tegucigalpa Honduras Temples.
Church membership in Honduras has grown rapidly in the past 40 years. There were 6,300 Latter-day Saints there in 1980. Today, Honduras is home to more than 187,000 Latter-day Saints in nearly 240 congregations.
Latter-day Saints worship in temples for several reasons: to feel God’s love and peace, to learn more about God’s plan for His children and the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make promises with God and one’s spouse, and to unite families in this life and the next through sacred agreements with God in His holy house.
